Destroyer Akatsuki
When introduced into service these ships were the most powerful destroyers in the world. Akatsuki Dawn was the twenty-first Fubuki-class destroyer or the lead ship of the Akatsuki-class destroyer if that sub-class is regarded as a separate class built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the inter-war period. The Fubuki class set a new standard not only for Japanese vessels but for destroyers around the world.

According to most sources they are regarded as a sub-class of the Fubuki class partly because the Imperial Japanese Navy itself kept the improvements made a secret and did not officially designate these four destroyers as a separate class. The first Akatsuki class was a two vessels Torpedo Boat Destroyer class ordered by Japan in 1897 simultanously with 1898 Ikazuchi class and 1898 Murakumo class and completed between 1900 and 1901. The Japan Coast Guard s second Reimei -class patrol vessel launched in 2020 is named Akatsuki. Due to more efficient boilers only 3 rather than 4 where installed giving a distinctive look with a smaller round forefunnel.
